About 6 months before you turn 65
- Create or sign in to your Social Security account. Many people enroll in Part A and Part B there.
- List your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions. You will need this whether you stay with Original Medicare or compare Medicare Advantage.
- If you have employer or union coverage (yours or a spouse's), ask benefits whether that plan is primary or secondary to Medicare after 65, and whether it is creditable for Part D.
- Veterans: review how VA care and any TRICARE For Life coverage work with Medicare.
3 months before your birthday month (IEP opens)
- Your Initial Enrollment Period generally opens. Use the calculator on the home page for your exact months.
- Decide whether to take Part B now. Delaying Part B without qualifying coverage can mean a late penalty and a coverage gap.
- If you want a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy later, note that your best guaranteed-issue window usually starts when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B.
Your birthday month and the 3 months after
- IEP continues. Signing up later in the window usually means coverage starts the first of the month after you enroll.
- Compare coverage paths with a licensed agent or at Medicare.gov.
- If you join a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, remember Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) for future year changes.
